To be eligible under the Cheaper Home Batteries Scheme, a battery must be:
- CEC listed
- VPP compatible

VPP claims can be risky business

To truly pass an audit of VPP compatibility the only plausible and likely way for the government to verify claims of compatibility is to look at if the batteries you are selling have actually been proven to have actively participated in a VPP in the past. And to do this its likely they will look at the following:
- Proof of FCAS market activity
- Confirmation from AEMO (Australian Energy Market Operator)
No proof? Could equal to rebate clawback. And that clawback won’t hit the manufacturer. It hits you, the solar retailer.
Who pays if things go wrong?
If a battery you sold turns out not to be genuinely VPP-compatible, you’re left with a few bad options:
- Pay the rebate back out of pocket
- Ask the customer to repay it (good luck)
- Go out of business/declare bankruptcy
